Glass mosaic 50th anniversary of town twinning
The towns of Edingen-Neckarhausen
and Plouguerneau/France
While we were still working on the broken tile mosaic at the town hall in Edingen-Neckarhausen, the municipality contacted us with the request to create a mosaic for the 50th anniversary of the partnership between Edingen-Neckarhausen and Plouguerneau/France.

The mosaic was intended to serve as a gift to the partner municipality of Plouguerneau for a celebratory handover during the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the partnership.
The mosaic should be handy and not too big (approx. DIN A3)
The emblem of the partnership association should serve as a guide for the design of the motif.

The project had some challenges:

• Time until the handover of the finished mosaic: 2.5 weeks from the request (coordination of design, procurement of materials, completion)

• Given the proportions, too much writing in the desired motif (finding a symbolic representation of the two partner communities instead of the names)

• Finding a suitable carrier material (in terms of stability; suitability for attaching a hanging system; suitability for a dedication on the back)

Instead of the community names, we decided to use silhouettes of the respective landmarks.

Here are the drafts in their chronological order and the final draft:

We decided to use the following materials and techniques:
carrier material
• Vorex plate
• Thickness 10 mm (5 mm proved to be too unstable)
• Easy to stick on and possibility of adding a dedication to the back (smooth white surface)
• die Vorexplatte could be ordered directly with a colored printed motif

mosaic material
• Flat glass and glass rods in direct laying technique
• Higher quality of the surface
• More filigree processing options

Other Material
• Transparent all-purpose glue from Pattex
• Black flexible joint
• Suspension material

Now we can finally get to work!
Preparation of the carrier plate
Glass cutting and gluing
grouting and cleaning
The final result
Festive handover
