Leaded glass on a kitchen window
Bring new light into your rooms
A mosaic can also be created in another form. Without a concrete support element on which the mosaic is attached. This technique has been known for centuries in the form of lead glass on churches or other buildings of central importance.

It enables entire rooms to be bathed in a new light and thus also to create a completely different atmosphere.

This technology can now also find its way into your home.

In this case, the lead glass was firmly glued with a special adhesive in the frame of the thermal glass. In contrast to silicone, this adhesive has a very high level of adhesion and strength, is easier to process and still has a certain flexibility. It is odorless, does not emit any harmful substances and does not attack the adjacent materials such as the plastic frame.

But there are also possibilities to hang the lead glass freely in front of the window. This increases flexibility in the event of a move, for example. This type of installation is only advisable for windows that are not opened frequently. Furthermore, they make additional stabilizing measures within the lead glass necessary, which can have a negative optical influence.

here is an example of a freely hanging object,
that is not glued and at any time at another suitable window can be hung
But back to our actual project ...
As always, it starts with the design.

Then a glass selection is made and a stabilizing frame is built.
After this you can start cutting the glass.

The next step is to wrap the individual pieces of glass.
Each piece of glass is framed with a copper foil, which serves as a base for the later solder. A step that requires great care and is accordingly time-consuming.
If necessary, you can rework here with a scalpel.
Any inaccuracy here can later have optical but also structural consequences.

in the picture above you can see the foiled glass pieces,
which are already temporarily fixed with soldering points.

finished soldered
After soldering, the entire object is freed from the binding agent and then patinated black. It has to be cleaned thoroughly again.

After installation, the lead glass unfolds its full power in full sunlight. But even on a dull, rainy day the little light is enough to raise your mood and put your room in a whole new light!
